1. How are vital records created?

The creation process varies by the type of records. Birth records are created primarily within hospitals. Death records are initiated by the certifying physician or medical examiner and completed by the funeral director. Marriage records begin in the clerk’s office and are completed by the officiant.

2. What county is Cohasset in?

Cohasset is located in Norfolk County. We are different than the surrounding towns - they are in Plymouth County. For more information on Norfolk County view the History of Norfolk County page.

3. What is the function of town meeting?

The function of Town Meeting is to adopt laws (general and zoning), appropriate money, and set the salaries for elected officials.

4. When will the "All Facility Stickers" be available?

New stickers will be issued starting in mid March of each year and current registrations are needed. Standard Permit - $75, Senior Permit - $30, resident must be 65 by June 30 of current year.

Where to Purchase: Town Clerk’s Office, 41 Highland Avenue and the Department of Public Works, 91 Cedar Street. Stickers will be sold at the Health and Recreation Fair in March, the only weekend hours.

Residents can also purchase stickers through the mail. Make checks payable to the Town of Cohasset, mail to Town Clerk’s Office, 41 Highland Avenue. Please include the appropriate fee, a copy of your current registration and a self-addressed return envelope. Permits my also be ordered online on the Unipay website. 

Stickers are valid April 1 till March 31 and will allow access to the following places: - Recycling Transfer Facility - Sandy Beach - Sailing Club / Government Island - Yacht Club - Black Rock Beach - Parking at all other areas in town that require a sticker. In addition to the sticker, when going to the Recycling Transfer Facility (RTF) residents are required to purchase blue Pay-Per-Throw trash bags in which to dispose of all trash that cannot be recycled. These bags will be offered at the Department of Public Works building and various locations throughout the town.

5. Do I need to license my cat?

No, at this time licenses for cats are not required.

6. Do I need to license my dog every year?

Yes. The license period each year is from January 1 to December 31. After May 1 an additional late fee of $25 may be charged. Rabies certificates are also required annually

7. How soon should I license my dog?

Every dog 6 months old, or older, should be licensed.

8. Are notary services available at the Clerk's Office?

Yes. Both the Town Clerk, Carol St. Pierre, and the Assistant Town Clerk, Elizabeth Anderson, are notaries.

9. May I register to vote online?

Yes online voter registration is available. Voter registration may be done in the following ways: - By mail - In any clerk’s office throughout the Commonwealth - At the Registry of Motor Vehicles. If you register in Cohasset and live in “Our town”, the office forwards your registration to your hometown.

10. May I vote by absentee ballot for Town Meeting?

No. There are no provisions in the law regarding absentee voting at Town Meetings.
