The South Shore Recycling Cooperative (SSRC) was established in 1998 with an overall goal to reduce quantity, toxicity, and cost of waste disposal. Currently there are 14 towns around the South Shore that participate in the program. The SSRC accomplishes their goals by assisting in the following:
- Managing their solid waste programs efficiently
- Providing economy of scale through regional procurement of services while allowing participating towns to maintain full control over solid waste management
- Educating residents about how and why they should manage their waste materials thoughtfully
- Advocating for funding, sensible laws and regulations that accomplish the goal of minimizing waste and cost, and maximizing recovery at the municipal level
