One-time Real Estate Tax Assistance
This fall the Town of Cohasset is sponsoring a one-time real estate tax assistance program for elderly and/or disabled low-income residents.
Back in 2000, Cohasset adopted a chapter of the Massachusetts General Laws that allowed taxpayers to make a voluntary donation on their tax bills each year for “the purpose of defraying the real estate taxes of elderly and disabled persons of low income”. Such funds, referred to as “Voluntary Checkoff Donations” were deposited into a special account in the general treasury in custody of the town treasurer. The option for making “Voluntary Checkoff Donations” was removed from the tax bills for fiscal 2020 by vote at the 2019 Annual Town Meeting. A Taxation Aid Committee was recently appointed by the Board of Selectmen to disburse the funds in accordance with the provisions of the General Law.
Individual awards to be applied to the tax bills are estimated to approximate $500. The total account balance of approximately $6,500 will be allocated among the FY 2020 tax bills of qualified homeowners receiving an award.
